This week, Tractian announced a $130M Series D, led by Sapphire Ventures and co-led by M&G’s Catalyst. If Sapphire's name sounds familiar, it should. They led our Series C, too.
I've spent my career in revenue, and I've learned to trust one signal above all others: who comes back. A first purchase tells you someone was persuaded. A second one tells you it worked, and now you are a trusted partner. When Sapphire watched our results up close and chose to lead again, they did exactly what our best customers do every quarter. They doubled down.
That's the growth story I want to tell. Not the valuation. The return trips!
The best growth is earned twice
Industrial buyers are skeptical, and they've earned the right to be. Most of them have watched a promising pilot quietly die in a single plant and felt the sting of empty promises. They have experienced frustration betting their budgets on solutions that never delivered ROI or solved their problems. So the number I watch most closely isn't how many new customers we sign. It's what happens after we deploy at the first site.
Here’s what usually happens. A team starts with one plant and a handful of machines they’re worried about. Within weeks, they catch something they would have missed. Then the plant manager calls a sister site. Then operations leadership starts to ask why every plant isn’t running this way. Some of the world’s largest operators, from Whirlpool and Cummins to Coca-Cola bottlers and Eli Lilly, didn’t come to Tractian all at once. They grew into it, one site at a time, on the strength of their own results.
Take Ingredion. It started with one plant in North Kansas City. Today, Tractian runs across several Ingredion plants in the U.S., from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to Moses Lake, Washington, plus active deployments in Cardinal, Canada, and Hamburg, Germany. That’s over a dozen sites in three countries, and every one of them traces back to that first plant.
Every one of those expansions was earned twice: once when a team took a chance on us, and again when we proved it was worth it.
Why they come back
The honest answer is that the results show up in their own numbers. Repairs get planned instead of rushed. Orders are produced on time. Lines stay up, and operations are predictable. Independent research from Verdantix put it in terms a CFO can use: $5.14M in benefits over three years, with break-even in eight months.
But the expansions I'm proudest of don't start in a finance review. They start on the plant floor, when a maintenance team gets its weekends back and tells the plant down the road. That kind of word of mouth can't be bought. It can only be earned, one successfully caught failure at a time.
Where growth goes next
The Series D is fuel for four directions:
- Beyond the factory. As Anders Ranum at Sapphire put it, the AI boom is driving a massive build-out of physical infrastructure, and the companies building and running it can't afford equipment failures. Manufacturing will always be at our core, and we're also scaling into data centers, defense, utilities, energy and water, rail and transit, and other critical infrastructure and facilities.
- Deeper with the customers we already serve. More assets, more sites and more of the platform, for teams that have already seen what it can do.
- Closer to home. Manufacturers are pulling production back onto American soil, and every new line they bring online needs to run optimized from day one.
- Smarter with every machine. We’re investing in physical AI, building hardware and software together so our models learn from real equipment in real plants. More data, more signals, sharper predictions with more accuracy and lead time for every customer.
Growth is a people business
None of this growth belongs to a sales team alone. It belongs to our incredible R&D and engineering teams who continue to push the boundaries of what is possible, the sales engineers who scope every site, the installers in hard hats, the technical account managers who answer the phone when a customer needs something, and the AEs who earn trust one “in person” walkthrough at a time. Every expansion I described above is a promise one of them kept.
The next chapter needs more of them. If you want to help keep the world's critical machines running, and you want to do it with a team that holds itself to a world-class standard, we're hiring. https://careers.tractian.com/jobs
To our customers who keep coming back, and to Sapphire, M&G’s Catalyst, and every investor who joined them: thank you for the trust. We intend to earn it again.
